The audit trail

"Open the audit package for the March bank reconciliation answer."

Who this is for, and the moment

September. The auditor asks how a figure in the March pack was supported. The person who answered it has left, the chat they used is gone, and the number sits in a deck with no footnote. I built the audit trail for this morning.

The question, as typed

“Open the audit package for the March bank reconciliation answer.”

The answer

The audit trail: 720 conversations with audited queries, one package expanded showing the question, the user, the time, the status Success and a View trace link

Real app, fictional company, captured 12 October 2026.

The package holds the question, the answer as it was given, every citation with its document, page or cell and quote, the verification status of each figure, the calculator steps, and the date and user. It is readable without the thread, and downloadable as a file.

The citation clicked

From the package, the cited document opens on the cell exactly as it did on the day. If someone has since deleted the document, the package still holds the reference and the quote. You lose the content, not the record.

The trust chain

There is no separate chain to open here. The strip the answer carried on the day is the package, frozen as it was.

The decisions, logged

The close skills write their reviewer decisions to the same trail: which journal was approved or queried, by whom, when, with the cited figure beside it. When the auditor asks who signed, you run a query instead of searching through email.

What to notice

  • Audit packages survive a deleted conversation by design: there is no foreign key to the thread, so deleting the chat cannot delete the record.
  • Every answer leaves one. I didn’t bolt the trail on for the auditors afterwards; it’s part of how an answer gets produced.
  • Advisory answers are in it too. The what-if from the board meeting reopens with the assumptions it was made under.

I take contract roles in finance automation and FP&A systems. Ask me anything about how Grounded works; I'm happy to walk through the parts that broke as well as the parts that worked.
