Who this is for, and the moment
Friday, quarter to five. The CFO wants one variance explained before the weekend. You know roughly where it is. “Roughly” turns out to be forty minutes of opening files, and the number you give from memory is the one that gets challenged on Monday.
The question, as typed
“For May 2026, what was total department operating expense, and how did Warehouse & Logistics carrier and freight charges compare to budget?”
The answer
Using the May-26 Monthly Reporting Pack as the governing issued pack:
| Metric | May-26 actual | May-26 budget | Variance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total department operating expenses | £4,832k | £4,805k | £27k adverse |
| Warehouse & Logistics — carrier & freight charges | £336k | £328k | £8k adverse |
The pack states figures are in £’000 and that department totals tie to the operating-expense lines of the Consolidated P&L, excluding depreciation and amortisation 737475. For Warehouse & Logistics, carrier & freight charges were £336k vs £328k budget, i.e. £8k over budget 5051. The May commentary notes the £336k includes a £285k accrual for a late carrier invoice received after the ledger cut 27.
Total department opex £4,832k. Warehouse & Logistics carriers £336k against £328k budget, £8k adverse. £‘000, month to date. Chips: Monthly Reporting Pack May-26, Opex by Department · Q2 FY26 KPI & Commentary Pack, the May commentary.

The trust chain
Seven figures on the strip, each traced to the pack or the commentary: the two totals, the two carrier lines, the two variances and the £285k accrual the commentary names. The guard passes all of them.
The follow-up that would have waited until Monday
“What’s behind the £8k?” The £285,000 Ridgway Freight accrual, posted after the ledger cut and included in the pack’s carriers figure. The department export was cut before it and shows £51k. The pack governs. Chips: GL extract, journal JNL-508295, the invoice.
What to notice
- The answer arrives with the cell attached, so Monday’s challenge gets settled on Friday.
- Asking now costs nothing, so the second question gets asked. That was the point I was making in the post: the questions a finance team stopped asking were the expensive ones, not the unimportant ones.
- Almost half of a finance team’s effort goes on collecting and validating data (FP&A Trends Survey 2026). This page is that half.
